Just stayed here for a week and overall had a mixed experience. The room itself was nice, clean, and comfortable, and the hotel facilities were also good. We enjoyed the pool/bar. ||Unfortunately, the service let it down. I found the staff — particularly at the main/front desk — to be rude and unhelpful on multiple occasions, which made the experience feel much less welcoming than it should have been.

Very nice place, friendly staff at the front desk, three elevators for guests, and a rooftop bar and pool. All good there. If I had to pick something to gripe about, there are no toiletries, like little bottles of shampoo or toothpaste, so if you forgot them you need to go to the CVS down the road for those, but that's a small thing compared to how nice staying there is.

I was extremely impressed with this hotel. We will definitely be back. There are many things to do/places to eat around the hotel. It has a wonderful rooftop/pool. The building is gorgeous and has maintained its historic charm. We booked a king room and found it to be incredibly clean and cozy. The water pressure was the best I have ever felt in my life. Beautiful tile in the bathroom, comfortable bed, and city views. Many reviews talk negatively about the noise levels but it's downtown LA, don't expect it to be quiet. I did not find it to be loud, although there were some fireworks around 3am. Overall, I cannot recommend this hotel enough!!!!

The Freehand was a fun place to stay. I especially enjoyed the pool atop the building. Its downtown location was great for local site-seeing and the room we stayed in (corner suite) had great views both north and east. Staff were always friendly but there were a few times when it was hard to get requests taken care of or difficult to get someone to answer at the front desk.

It's a solid place. I'll give it a 4.5. It's definitely dated but the rooms were very clean and the vibe of the place is chill (although not really the hostel vibe; it's too big and American for that). Quite a bit of street noise as well at all hours but I don't blame that on them. The water pressure is fantastic. The rooftop and breakfast are cool but real pricey. A few friends had intermittent key card issues but the staff were always great to resolve them. And please god fix your door by the elevators.

thoroughly enjoyed my stay here! it was my first time visiting LA. Mike at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. the rooftop pool was lovely. i left behind an item and the staff were able to locate it and hold it for me! i’ll be recommending this place to my friends. only downside was that the curtains did not fully close well so if you’re sensitive to light while sleeping, be prepared!

PROS - Walkable to Crypto Arena, great food options, Whole Foods/CVS next door. Staff was friendly, rooms were a solid size with a wardrobe and mini fridge. No complaints there. CONS - SUPER LOUD! The street noise is relentless — cars, honking, and the occasional late-night screaming match from below at all hours. Light sleepers, choose a diff spot. But the dealbreaker? A SURPRISE HIDDEN $65 FEE slapped on at check-in for a 2-night stay. Not mentioned during booking, not in the confirmation, just… there. Nothing says trust us like a hidden fee you discover with your credit card already out. Great location, friendly faces, questionable billing practices. I WOULD NOT STAY HERE AGAIN.

Lovely hotel. I really enjoyed my stay. Not bad price wise for dtla. And walking distance to good food and local near by music venues. And walkable to Union station aswell if you don't mind a 20min walk or so. Very clean room and friendly staff.
